Children’s Project Trust
Formally established in August 2002, CPT is a registered tax-exempt trust in India. However, its activities began in 1998. After working for 4 years in India on behalf of children’s welfare, the members of Children’s Project Trust decided to formalize their activities in response to the growing need for funds. A sister trust was then formed in the USA to facilitate funding.
CPT’s challenge
is to embrace and provide a nurturing environment for homeless and neglected children and to provide the care, guidance and opportunity that is needed by these children to grow into a strong and capable human being.
What we do
CPT provides residential living and education to destitute children. These children come from extremely poor backgrounds and most were living on the street before coming to CPT. Most were beggars and those who were not begging were engaged in full time child labor. All were malnourished and had no hope of education. The children had been deeply affected by neglect and they had suffered various degrees of abuse ranging from mild to severe.
Self-sustainability; village outreach program
This year we will harvest our first coffee crop. Coffee production will involve fair trading. We are actually implementing these fair trade principles and we welcome any help in the process.
OUR MISSION
Educational goal
Our primary educational goal is to provide these children who have no future with the skills necessary to become self-sufficient and independent. Without the support of CPT’s school, these children would not survive in a culture that does not even acknowledge their existence.
160 million Untouchables
In the rural villages, the “Untouchables” are often not allowed to drink from the same well as other Indians, nor can they live within the village or go to the village schools. Those who attempt to take their rightful place in the village have been beaten, killed and their homes destroyed.
Create an option, restore the child’s dignity
Many of the children who come to us have been in very abusive situations and some do not even know how to play. They are asked to beg and live under the threat of beatings if not enough money is gained from their begging. In our facility, we offer the nourishment and care they need to regain their self-worth, security and sense of well-being.
Our Gurukul schooling
CPT emphasizes quality education as well as fulfilling the children’s academic needs. In the Gurukul system the students live with their teachers and learn not only the school subjects but also the art of living. The teacher strengthens the student’s character by being closely involved with them and nurturing the development of their mind, heart, character, and approach to life. |
