 Creative Media
Creative communications skills, like writing, public speaking, drama and the visual arts, when linked with computer training, cultivate creativity, independent thinking and confidence. We have a new computer lab and it's the foundation of a creative media program. When children are taught to really think and express themselves articulately, anything is possible for them.
Our computer lab includes new and used Apple and PC laptops, on 1:1 ratio of child to computer. We were recently gifted with a large new iMac for the desktop. This is a great tool since we are expanding our media curriculum to include classes in video production, photography, print and web based media.
A graduate student from the University of Michigan, USA will join us as a guest instructor for 6 weeks at the onset of the school year, beginning on July 1st, 2010, to help us launch our new video curriculum. Another guest instructor was with us in 2009 and gave the older children a sound introduction to the craft (see Understanding Media). She plans to return in September 2010. Until then our communications director, who spent many years producing corporate videos in New York City, will oversee the program.
Two groups of students will participate in a two-month video production workshop, where they will learn how to write and record their own narrative soundtracks, conduct interviews and coordinate video shoots. They will edit their footage into short creative films, which we'll be featuring on the website. To do this they'll have to grow skills that will be of value in any profession: expressing thoughts clearly through words and images, computer literacy, organization, time management and of course, self-confidence!
The 11th Standard girls, who have already had one semester of basic computer, will progress to some more advanced design work in Microsoft Word and iPhoto, like newsletters, while children from 6th Standard and up will be introduced to the computer. Both will learn to use iMovie, the simple video editing program that comes standard on all Apple computers.
An independent section of the website, called "Our Days", will feature the children's writing, photography, artwork and film shorts. Over time, we plan to train those with an aptitude to take a role in the site's management.
Our creative media program is another way for us to teach our students how to express love, truth and dharma, to believe in themselves and to cultivate thoughtful, happy lives.
When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy. ~ JAHALADINRUMI
